Kentucky has just witnessed one of the most divisive elections in its history. But in one race, that for the U.S. Senate, there was a shared history between the candidates regarding one of the most important issues facing our nation, a severe viral pandemic.
Amy McGrath’s mother was stricken with polio, so was Sen. Mitch McConnell. Both candidates know pandemics can be deadly and public health advice needs to be followed. Similar to the COVID-19 virus, polio is asymptomatic in 72% of the population with another 24% having only 2 to 5 days of flu-like symptoms. Deaths are very rare but polio, similar to COVID-19, even if one survives can leave long-lasting severe disability. Neither polio nor COVID-19 is a political issue.
