Highlights

•    Chloramine decaying Protein (CDP) existed in chloraminated system.
•    Chloramine dosing in chloraminated reactor induced the production of CDP.
•    Both bulk water and suspended biomass from chloraminated reactor contained CDP.
•    Short term chloramine stress further induced CDP production in biomass.
•    In the absence of chloramine, in ammoniated reactor, CDP gradually disappeared.

Abstract

In this paper, for the first time, we show in chloraminated systems, the chloramine decaying proteins (CDP) play an important role in bulk water and biomass (biofilm) in resisting disinfectant.
