Spain health authorities are reporting an outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV). The outbreaks, first reported in early August, have been recorded in Sevilla, Cádiz, and Huelva provinces (Andalucía region), and Badajoz province (Extremadura region). Through October 8, a total of 75 WNV cases (40 confirmed and 35 probable), of which 56 cases presented neurological symptoms and required hospitalization. 7 deaths have been recorded. The Spain outbreak has prompted the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a travel notice for the area. All travelers are at risk. Travelers over 50 years of age are at the highest risk for severe disease from West Nile virus.
