•    Microbial community were first revealed in indoor dusts from university dormitories.
•    Acinetobacter, Paracoccus and Kocuria were the most abundant genera.
•    Acinetobacter spp., Kocuria spp., Corynebacterium spp. and Bacillus spp. were potential pathogens.
•    Chemoheterotrophy, aerobic chemoheterotrophy, nitrate reduction were major microbial functions.
•    BDE 138 and BDE 153 were crucial factors shaping the bacterial community.
