GOJO Industries said it is taking immediate steps to comply with a warning from the federal government that the Akron company’s marketing about the effectiveness and use of its Purell alcohol-based hand sanitizer products is misleading.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Jan. 17 sent a six-page warning letter to GOJO that said in part the company cannot claim in its marketing that Purell is effective in preventing disease and infection from Ebola, influenza, MRSA, norovirus and other pathogens because Purell has not been proven to do so.
