About half of adolescents in Dallas County aren’t getting a recommended vaccine that prevents multiple types of cancer — even though two of those cancers are increasingly prevalent. Yet a major reason for the low vaccination rates is that parents don’t believe the vaccine is necessary, according to new research from UT Southwestern Medical Center.

University researchers presented the results at a summit they hosted last week on the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The meeting brought together experts from top cancer centers across the country to discuss how to improve vaccination rates, alleviate parents’ fears, address misconceptions and help physicians talk to families about the vaccine.
