In what will probably be one of the weirdest but coolest stories I will write about Borderlands, Gearbox has just revealed the existence of an in-game addition to Borderlands 3 called “Borderlands Science.” It’s goal? To help real-life scientists map the human gut microbiome through a minigame being planted within Borderlands 3. Yes, really. Here’s what Gearbox has to say about the project: “There are trillions of microbes inhabiting each of our bodies. Unfortunately, due to the complexity from billions of years of evolution, computers struggle to relate these microbes. It would take humans hundreds of thousands of hours and an enormous team to help train computers to accomplish this difficult task. This is where Borderlands Science plays a role.
