Antibiotics are drugs used to fight infections caused by bacteria – but some bacteria become resistant and no longer respond to these drugs. This phenomenon is known as antibiotic resistance. In Europe, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control estimates that 25,000 people die each year as a direct result of antibiotic resistance. In France, despite a national plan to preserve the efficacy of antibiotics, levels of antibiotic consumption remain particularly high.
